How to Get Rid of Blender Smell for Good

A sour or moldy smell from a blender you thought was clean almost always comes from the rubber gasket, the ring that seals the blade to the jar. Old smoothie residue gets trapped under and around it and grows mold where a rinse of the jar never reaches. Take the base apart, pull the gasket, and wash every piece, and the smell goes.

We make small-batch beeswax candles in Far Rockaway, so a room that truly smells clean is our whole focus, and that always starts at the source rather than the scent. Below is where the smell comes from, how to clear it step by step, and how to keep the space fresh afterward, with the full the MBur beeswax candle collection here as you read.

Why the gasket is the problem

The gasket seals the blade assembly to the bottom of the jar, and liquid seeps under it and sits in the dark. The blade housing has crevices too, and a quick rinse of the jar skips right past both.

Given a few days of thick smoothie or dairy residue, that trapped film grows mold, which is the source of the smell. The only fix is to take the base apart and clean each piece.

How to clean it, step by step

  1. Disassemble the base. With the blender unplugged, unscrew the blade collar from the bottom of the jar, then lift out the blade and the rubber gasket.
  2. Wash each piece. Clean the jar, blade, collar, and gasket separately in hot soapy water, using a brush to get into the blade housing.
  3. Treat any mold. Soak the gasket for a few minutes in a vinegar-and-water solution, scrub it, and rinse.
  4. Dry everything fully. Dry all parts, the gasket especially, before you put it back together, since a damp gasket regrows mold.
  5. Reassemble so it seals. Seat the gasket properly so the blade seals to the jar and liquid cannot leak past it next time.

Do not run the blender to clean it and call it done. A soap-and-water blend rinses the jar but never touches the gasket, which is where the smell lives.

Keep it from coming back

Rinse and take the base apart after blending anything thick or dairy-based, and do not leave a used blender sitting overnight.

Let all the parts air-dry fully before reassembly so moisture never gets trapped under the gasket.

Freshen the whole room once the source is gone

With a moldy gasket handled, the air itself is the last step. A clean candle is the finishing touch here, best lit once the space is already clean. From there it is the fastest way to make the room read fresh rather than merely neutral.

For your kitchen, Slice of Life fits well. It is green and garden-fresh, with tomato leaf, basil, and lemon peel, and like every MBur candle it is poured from 100% beeswax with a wooden wick and phthalate-free non-toxic fragrance oils, so freshening the air never means adding soot on top.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my blender smell even after washing it?

Because the smell is under the gasket, not in the jar. Until you remove and clean the rubber ring, washing the jar will not fix it.

Can I put the gasket in the dishwasher?

Most gaskets are dishwasher-safe on the top rack, but a hand wash lets you scrub the crevices and check for mold more thoroughly.

How often should I deep-clean the base?

Take it apart every week or two if you blend often, and any time you notice a smell.

Is a moldy gasket safe to keep using?

Clean it thoroughly first. If mold keeps returning or the rubber is cracked, replace the gasket, since they are inexpensive.
