Container width is the main thing that sets wick size. Measure across the widest opening, the inside rim, not the base.

Here is a rough guide makers start from. Your own burn test is the real proof, but this shows the pattern.

How to spot a well-wicked candle before you buy

You cannot always test a candle in the store. So use these signals instead.

Check the wick against the width

Look at the wick and the opening together. A tiny wick in a wide jar is a red flag. The flame will struggle to reach the edges.

Know the wax

Beeswax has the highest melting point of any candle wax. That is why it burns so long. It also means the wick has to be built to match that heat.

A wooden wick handles this well. It stays lit, burns evenly, and crackles a little while it works.

The first burn still matters

Even a perfect wick needs a good first burn. This is where you do your part.

The first time you light a candle, let it burn until the whole top melts to the glass. For most sizes that means two to four hours. Skip this and you set a memory ring, and the candle may tunnel from then on.
