The earliest use of wicked candles dates back thousands of years, but it was the Romans who are first credited with perfecting the dipped beeswax candle around 2,000 years ago. Unlike tallow (animal fat) candles, which were smoky and foul smelling, beeswax was a revelation.

It burned with a clean, bright flame, produced almost no smoke, and gave off a subtle, pleasant honey scent. Its light was said to be the closest to the spectrum of natural sunlight. These remarkable qualities made it incredibly valuable and rare.

A Sacred Flame in the Middle Ages

Throughout the Middle Ages, the use of beeswax candles became widespread in religious ceremonies, particularly within the Catholic Church. The purity of the beeswax was seen as a symbol of the purity of Christ. Its clean burn was also a practical necessity, preventing soot from blackening the precious art and walls of cathedrals.

Because it was so expensive to produce, beeswax remained the candle of the aristocracy and the church, while common people continued to use smoky tallow. To burn a beeswax candle in your home was a clear sign of wealth and status.

The Modern Renaissance: A Return to Quality

In the 19th century, the invention of paraffin wax changed everything. This cheap, petroleum based byproduct made candles accessible to everyone, and beeswax fell out of common use. The world traded quality for quantity.

Today, we are witnessing a renaissance. As people seek out healthier, more sustainable, and [higher quality products], they are rediscovering the timeless virtues of beeswax. We founded MBur Candle Co. as part of this movement. We are taking this ancient, perfect material and giving it a modern context. We pair the traditional purity of 100% pure beeswaxwith modern innovations: sophisticated, phthalate-free fragrances, the unique crackle of an all natural wooden wick, and a minimalist vessel designed for a contemporary home.
