Are beeswax candles actually better?

When you are choosing a candle, you are choosing a material to burn in your home. And not all materials are created equal. The wax a candle is made from is the single most important factor determining its performance, its health impact, and its overall value.

But with terms like "natural blend," "soy wax," and "premium paraffin" floating around, the choice can be confusing. It is time for a clear, direct comparison.

At MBur Candle Co., we chose our wax based on rigorous research. We believe in our choice so strongly that we want to show you the data. This is a head to head comparison of the three most common candle waxes.

Metric 1: Air Quality & Health

  • Loser: Paraffin. Made from petroleum, it can release [known carcinogens] like benzene and toluene when burned. It is the least healthy option for your indoor air.

  • Good: Soy. A vegetable wax, soy is non toxic and burns cleanly without the harmful chemicals of paraffin. It is a massive step up for your health.

  • Winner: Beeswax. Beeswax is also completely non toxic and hypo allergenic. It then goes one step further. It is the only wax known to be a [natural air purifier], releasing negative ions that neutralize dust and dander. It actively improves your air quality.

Metric 2: Burn Time & Longevity

  • Loser: Soy. With a very low melting point and low density, soy wax burns the fastest of the three.

  • Good: Paraffin. Its burn rate can vary based on additives, but it is generally a fast burning wax.

  • Winner: Beeswax. Beeswax is the densest natural wax and has the highest melting point. This means it [burns significantly longer] and slower than both soy and paraffin, offering a much better long term value from a single candle.

Metric 3: Origin & Sustainability

  • Loser: Paraffin. A byproduct of the non renewable crude oil industry. It is the least sustainable or environmentally friendly option.

  • Good (with caveats): Soy. A renewable resource from soybeans. However, it is often linked to large scale monoculture farming, which can contribute to deforestation and requires heavy pesticide use.

  • Winner: Beeswax. A completely natural and renewable resource created by bees as part of the pollination cycle. Sourcing from ethical, sustainable apiaries, as we do, supports the crucial role bees play in a healthy ecosystem.

The Verdict: The Undisputed Champion

When you look at the data side by side, the choice becomes clear. While soy is a good, non toxic alternative to paraffin, beeswax consistently wins across every key category. It is better for your health, it lasts longer, and it comes from a more beneficial environmental process.
