Why Your Towels Smell Musty (and How to Fix It)
Your towels smell musty even when clean because they have been left damp, bunched on a hook or the floor, and grown mildew that regular washing does not fully remove. A vinegar wash, a baking soda wash, and drying them fully clears it.
We make small-batch beeswax candles in Far Rockaway, so a room that truly smells clean is our whole focus, and that always starts at the source rather than the scent. Below is where the smell comes from, how to clear it step by step, and how to keep the space fresh afterward, with the full the MBur beeswax candle collection here as you read.
Why towels turn musty
A damp towel folded on a hook stays wet in the folds, which is exactly what mildew needs. The smell builds and often survives a normal wash, so the towel comes out of the dryer still musty.
Detergent residue and fabric softener make it worse by coating the fibers and trapping odor. Stripping that out is part of the fix, as the EPA's household mold guide comes down to controlling the moisture that feeds mildew.
How to fix it, step by step
- Wash with vinegar. Run the towels through a hot wash with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, to break down mildew and built-up residue.
- Follow with baking soda. Run a second hot wash with a half cup of baking soda and no detergent, to deodorize.
- Dry them fully and promptly. Tumble dry completely and take them out right away, since a towel left damp in the machine remolds.
- Skip fabric softener. It leaves a residue that traps odor and cuts absorbency, so leave it out on towels.
- Hang them spread out. Drape towels flat on a bar between uses. A towel bunched on a hook cannot dry.
Hanging them spread out matters most. A towel that dries fully between uses does not grow the mildew that causes the smell.
Keep it from coming back
Wash towels every three to four uses, and never leave a damp towel in a pile on the floor.
Run the bathroom fan or open a window to lower humidity so towels dry faster.
Freshen the whole room once the source is gone
With musty towels handled, the air itself is the last step. A clean candle is the finishing touch here, best lit once the space is already clean. From there it is the fastest way to make the room read fresh rather than merely neutral.
For your bathroom, Wine Down fits well. It is calm and herbal, with lavender, chamomile, and sage, and like every MBur candle it is poured from 100% beeswax with a wooden wick and phthalate-free non-toxic fragrance oils, so freshening the air never means adding soot on top.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my towels smell even after washing?
Mildew and detergent residue are set into the fibers. A vinegar wash followed by a baking soda wash strips both, and full drying prevents a return.
How often should I wash towels?
Every three to four uses for bath towels, and sooner if they stay damp or smell.
Does fabric softener cause the smell?
It can. Softener leaves a residue that traps odor and reduces absorbency, so skip it on towels.
How do I keep towels from getting musty?
Hang them spread out to dry between uses, wash them regularly, and keep the bathroom ventilated.
