Why Your Shower Drain Smells (and How to Fix It)

A foul, sometimes sewer-like smell rising from the shower drain comes from hair, soap scum, and skin oils rotting in the clog just below the grate. Pull the hair out, break down the rest with baking soda and vinegar, and flush it, and the smell clears.

We make small-batch beeswax candles in Far Rockaway, so a room that truly smells clean is our whole focus, and that always starts at the source rather than the scent. Below is where the smell comes from, how to clear it step by step, and how to keep the space fresh afterward, with the full the MBur beeswax candle collection here as you read.

Why it smells worse over time

Hair catches on the crossbars and stopper, binding soap scum and skin oils into a slimy mass just below the drain cover. That mass decomposes, which is the smell, and it grows as more hair collects.

Left alone it also slows the drain, so water sits and the smell wafts up whenever the shower runs or stands. Clearing the clog is what stops it.

How to clear it, step by step

  1. Pull the hair out. Remove the drain cover or stopper and pull the clog with a plastic drain-hair tool or a bent piece of wire, wearing gloves.
  2. Break down the rest. Pour in half a cup of baking soda, then a cup of white vinegar, let it foam for ten to fifteen minutes, and flush with hot water.
  3. Scrub the drain and stopper. Clean the crossbars and the stopper where scum clings.
  4. Snake a stubborn clog. A drain snake reaches deeper buildup. Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners, which can damage pipes and do not fix the smell.
  5. Flush weekly. A baking soda and hot water flush keeps buildup from rebuilding.

A hair catcher over the drain prevents most of it. Stopping hair before it goes down is far easier than pulling clogs out later.

Why Your Shower Drain Smells (and How to Fix It)

Keep it from coming back

Use a drain hair catcher and rinse it after each shower, and do the baking soda flush routine every week or two.

Do not rinse loose hair down the drain when you clean the shower.

Freshen the whole room once the source is gone

With the drain clog handled, the air itself is the last step. A clean candle is the finishing touch here, best lit once the space is already clean. From there it is the fastest way to make the room read fresh rather than merely neutral.

For your bathroom, Wine Down fits well. It is calm and herbal, with lavender, chamomile, and sage, and like every MBur candle it is poured from 100% beeswax with a wooden wick and phthalate-free non-toxic fragrance oils, so freshening the air never means adding soot on top.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my shower drain smell like sewage?

Decomposing hair and soap scum in the clog give off the smell. If it persists after clearing the clog, the drain trap may be dry, which needs water run through it.

Are chemical drain cleaners a good idea?

It is better to avoid them. They can damage pipes and rarely clear a hair clog fully. Pulling the hair and using baking soda and vinegar is safer and more effective.

How often should I clean the drain?

Pull the catcher clean after each shower and flush the drain every week or two.

What is the slimy pink stuff around the drain?

A common airborne bacteria that thrives in damp bathrooms. Scrub it off with a vinegar or bleach solution and keep the area dry.
