Why Your Dishwasher Smells (and How to Fix It)

You open the dishwasher expecting clean dishes and get a sour, swampy smell that clings to the glasses. The fix is almost always the filter at the bottom of the tub, plus a wipe of the door gasket and a hot vinegar cycle. Do those three things and the smell clears fast.

We make small-batch beeswax candles in Far Rockaway, so a room that truly smells clean is our whole focus, and that always starts at the source rather than the scent. Below is where the smell comes from, how to clear it step by step, and how to keep the space fresh afterward, with the full the MBur beeswax candle collection here as you read.

Why it gets worse the longer you wait

The smell is a warning that food is rotting somewhere inside. The most common source is the removable filter at the bottom, which catches scraps so they do not redeposit on your dishes. When it clogs, that trapped food ferments between cycles, and every wash recirculates the funk back over everything on the racks.

Left alone it spreads into a slimy biofilm along the rubber door gasket and inside the spray-arm holes, which is why a quick rinse never fixes it. That film is really mold and bacteria feeding on trapped moisture, the same process the EPA's household mold guide ties to any damp, enclosed spot. The longer it sits, the deeper it sets.

How to clear it out

  1. Clean the filter. Pull out the bottom rack, twist the filter counterclockwise, and lift it out. Rinse it under hot water and scrub the mesh with a soft brush and a little dish soap until the water runs clear, then lock it back in.
  2. Wipe the gasket and spray arms. Mold hides in the folds of the door seal, so wipe it with a baking soda paste. Clear any blocked spray-arm holes with a toothpick so water moves freely.
  3. Run a vinegar cycle. Put a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl on the top rack and run a hot cycle with the machine otherwise empty. The vinegar cuts grease and mineral scale that hold odor.
  4. Follow with baking soda. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the floor of the tub and run a short hot cycle to neutralize any smell the vinegar loosened.
  5. Let it dry. Prop the door open for an hour or two after cycles. A sealed, damp tub is what lets mildew regrow.

If the filter is clean and it still smells

When the filter, gasket, and spray arms are clean and the odor holds on, look at the drain path. The dishwasher empties through a hose that loops up to the sink drain or disposal, and a clog or a low sag lets dirty water sit and turn.

If your setup has an air gap, the small chrome cylinder on the counter beside the faucet, food can pack inside it and give off a smell that seems to come from the machine. Pop its cap off and clear it. Running the tap until it is hot before you start a cycle also helps, since the dishwasher then fills with hot water from the first minute and dissolves grease more completely.

Keep it fresh

Scrape plates before loading, rinse the filter about once a week, and run a vinegar cycle monthly. If you have hard water, an occasional citric-acid cycle clears the scale that holds odor.

A dishwasher that fills hot, drains freely, and dries between loads stays fresh on its own.

Freshen the whole room once the source is gone

With a fouled filter handled, the air itself is the last step. A clean candle is the finishing touch here, best lit once the space is already clean. From there it is the fastest way to make the room read fresh rather than merely neutral.

For your kitchen, Zesty fits well. It is fresh and lively, with mandarin, sea air, and a touch of black pepper, and like every MBur candle it is poured from 100% beeswax with a wooden wick and phthalate-free non-toxic fragrance oils, so freshening the air never means adding soot on top.

Frequently asked questions

My dishwasher still smells after cleaning the filter. Why?

Check the gasket folds and the spray-arm holes next, then the drain hose. Biofilm in any of those keeps the smell going even with a clean filter.

Can I use bleach?

Avoid bleach if your dishwasher has any stainless steel interior parts, since it can corrode them. Vinegar and baking soda are safe for every machine.

Why does it smell worse in summer?

Warm kitchens speed up bacterial growth in any food or water left inside, so a machine that only faintly smelled in winter can turn noticeable in the heat. Rinse the filter more often through the warm months.

Is it safe to run vinegar and baking soda together?

Run them in separate cycles. Vinegar first to cut grease and scale, then baking soda in a second short cycle to neutralize what is left. Combined in one load they mostly cancel each other out.
