A smell or a weak spray means buildup on the nozzle. Clear it at the source, then light something clean.

An unpleasant smell from the bidet, or a weaker spray, usually means the nozzle has bacterial buildup and mineral scale. It stays damp, and on basic models it does not self-clean. Run the self-clean, wipe and descale the nozzle, and the smell clears.
We make small-batch beeswax candles in New York City, so a room that truly smells clean is our whole focus. That always starts at the source rather than the scent. Below is where the smell comes from, how to clear it step by step, and how to keep the space fresh after, with the full MBur beeswax candle collection here as you read.
Smell, cause, fix
| What you notice | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bad smell | Biofilm on a damp nozzle | Self-clean, wipe, disinfect |
| Weak or uneven spray | Hard-water scale inside the nozzle | Descale with vinegar, rinse |
| Smell near the seat | Residue where seat meets toilet | Wipe the seat and the join |
| Room still stale after cleaning | Air is neutral, not fresh | Light a 100% beeswax candle |
Why the nozzle builds up
The nozzle sits in a warm, damp area and catches residue. Without a self-clean function, biofilm and hard-water scale build on and inside it. That is what smells, and it can clog the spray.
It only worsens with use. A nozzle left uncleaned goes from a faint smell to a weak, uneven spray. Cleaning and descaling it resets both.
How to clean it, step by step
- Run the self-clean. Many bidets have a nozzle-cleaning mode. Run it first if yours does.
- Extend and wipe the nozzle. Extend it by hand per the manual. Wipe it with a cloth and mild soapy water, and use a soft toothbrush on the tip.
- Descale with vinegar. For mineral buildup, wipe or briefly soak the nozzle with a vinegar solution to dissolve scale, then rinse. Check the manual, since some finishes dislike vinegar.
- Disinfect. Wipe with a diluted disinfectant that is safe for the material, then rinse.
- Clean around it. Wipe the bidet seat and where it meets the toilet, which collect residue too.
Regular wiping beats a deep clean. A nozzle wiped weekly never builds up enough biofilm or scale to smell or clog.
Keep it from coming back
Run the self-clean function regularly, and wipe the nozzle weekly. Descale periodically if you have hard water, which is what clogs the spray over time.
Freshen the whole room once the source is gone
With the nozzle handled, the air is the last step. A clean candle is the finishing touch, best lit once the space is already clean. From there it is the fastest way to make the room read fresh rather than merely neutral.
For your bathroom, Wine Down fits well. It is calm and herbal, with lavender, chamomile, sage, cedar, and sandalwood. Like every MBur candle it is poured from 100% beeswax with a wooden wick and phthalate-free non-toxic fragrance oils, so freshening the air never means adding soot on top.
The bathroom pick. Herbal and quiet, easy on sensitive breathers. You'll love this if you love a long bath and a dim light.
Light this on cleaning day. Cool and sharp, the smell of a room that just got sorted out.
Our top seller, and the one for guests. It makes a small bathroom feel like a good hotel.
What to watch for on a label
The US does not regulate the word "beeswax" on a candle. A paraffin blend with 1% beeswax can still be labelled a beeswax candle. Many "soy" candles are not 100% soy either. MBur is 100% beeswax, one ingredient, never a blend. Beeswax is a byproduct of honey production and the oldest candle material we know of, around 5,000 BCE.
