Why the soy needs help
Paraffin holds a lot of fragrance oil without weeping it back out. Soy wax holds less, and it is fussier. Soy alone frosts, pulls away from the glass, and sets with a lumpy surface that customers return.
Paraffin also gives up scent fast. It has a lower melting point than beeswax, so it liquefies quickly and pushes oil into the air in the first twenty minutes. Add three wicks to a wide jar and you get a large melt pool, more heat, and a scent throw you can smell from the next room.

The additives nobody reads out loud
Wax and fragrance are not the whole ingredient panel. White Barn products also list stabilizers: BHT, pentaerythrityl stabilizers, hydroxyl-benzotriazole, and hindered amine light stabilizers.
Those are not exotic. BHT is an antioxidant that keeps oils from going off. Benzotriazole compounds and hindered amine light stabilizers are UV protectants, the same family of chemistry used to stop plastics from yellowing in sunlight.

That is not automatically alarming. Plenty of aroma chemicals are well studied and boring. The problem is that one word gives you no way to tell a phthalate-free fragrance from a toxic fragrance carrying phthalates or parabens as carriers and fixatives.
Some candle brands do not label phthalate-free at all, and trace amounts can turn up as impurities held under regulatory limits. Others put it in writing. When you are sensitive to something, that written line is the only tool you have.

The second is the flame itself. If it gutters, mushrooms, or climbs above half an inch, the wick is too long and it is throwing carbon into the room. How to burn any jar candle so it actually lasts
These steps apply to a blend jar and to beeswax equally. They are the difference between 25 hours and 45 out of the same candle.
- Give it a proper first burn. Let the melt pool reach the full width of the jar before you blow it out. On a wide three-wick jar that takes 2 to 3 hours, sometimes 4.
- Trim to about a quarter inch every time you relight. Long wicks smoke, mushroom, and burn unevenly.
- Stop at four hours. Past that the glass overheats, the wax degrades, and soot picks up.
- Store it cool and out of the sun. Heat and UV fade wax and weaken the fragrance oil, which is exactly what those UV stabilizers are fighting.
- Fix tunneling early. If a ring of hard wax is forming at the edge, run a longer burn next time before it sets into a permanent wall.
Ventilation helps too. Crack a window or leave a door open when you burn in a small room, especially a bathroom or a bedroom.
Five things to check on the next candle you buy
- Is one wax named, or is it a list? A single wax means the brand has nothing to average out.
- Does it say phthalate-free in writing on the fragrance?
- Are dyes disclosed, or is the wax colored with nothing at all?
- What is the wick made of, and is the burn time published by size?
- Can you work out the cost per burn hour from the price? That number tells you more than the sticker does.
