The wick is a build, not just a piece of string

How the three main waxes compare

Before the table, one thing about paraffin, because the standard line about it lands better once you see the steps.

Crude oil goes into a refinery and gets separated into fuels. The heavy leftover fraction still holds wax, so it gets dewaxed. The wax pulled out of that step is cleaned up, bleached, and sold. That material is paraffin. It is the residue of fuel production, sold on because a buyer was found for it, and it is still the most common candle wax in the world because it is the cheapest.

Beeswax is also the oldest candle material we know of, in use since roughly 5,000 BCE. It needs no chemical processing to become a candle, because it arrives from the hive already solid.

Two checks you can run on any candle tonight

You do not need a lab. You need a wall and your own eyes.

First, look at the inside rim of the jar after a long burn. Gray or black film climbing the glass is soot, and soot on the glass means soot in the room. Second, look above wherever you burn candles most. Move a picture frame on that wall. If there is a lighter rectangle behind it, something has been settling on your paint.

Third, and this one is about the fragrance rather than the wax. Smell the candle cold, then smell it again about twenty minutes into a burn. A scent that goes sharp or chemical once heated is telling you something about what is in the oil.

But soy is plant based, so isn't that already the clean choice?

Soy is a genuine step up from paraffin, and nobody serious argues otherwise. The wax itself is not the problem in most soy candles. The problem is what gets added to it: a paraffin percentage to harden the blend, a dye to make the wax pretty, a fragrance oil with no disclosure behind it. A brand that pours full soy with phthalate-free fragrance, as P.F. states it does, has closed most of those gaps.

But I have burned jar candles for years and never noticed a thing
