Cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol turn up in hand cream and hair conditioner, and also on the published ingredient list of some of the most expensive candles in the store. Both are fatty alcohols. Both do the same job in either place: they stiffen a soft material and control how it sets as it cools.
That single detail tells you something useful about luxury candles. The scent gets all the copywriting, while the wax quietly does most of the work. I read these lists often, partly because we make candles from one wax and nothing else, and partly because a five-word ingredient list can hide a lot of decisions a buyer never gets to see.
A candle is one of the few things you burn indoors with almost no label
Shampoo has to list what is in it. Food has to list what is in it. A candle sits in a strange gap. In most markets it is sold as a home fragrance object, so the maker decides how much to tell you.
That is why two candles at the same price can carry wildly different amounts of information. One brand prints a full component list. Another prints the scent name and the burn time and stops.
The word "fragrance" makes the gap wider. Under fragrance rules, a scent formula can be treated as a trade secret. One word on the label can stand for dozens of separate materials, and the maker is not required to break them out.
So when you ask what is in a candle, you are really asking two questions. What did the brand choose to tell you, and what does that tell you about the parts they did not?
What Byredo says about its candles, and where the two stories differ
Byredo is a Stockholm fragrance house known for spare packaging, its recognizable hand-poured black wax, and candles made in France using mouth-blown glass and cotton wicks. The brand describes the candle wax as a blend of beeswax and vegetable wax. Standard sizes are quoted at roughly 60 to 70 burn hours.
Individual product ingredient listings tell a slightly longer story. Published components include cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, microcrystalline wax, paraffin, and fragrance.
Both of those things can be true at once. A blend can lead with beeswax and vegetable wax and still carry petroleum-derived waxes to fix the texture, the color, and the way the surface looks after the tenth burn.
Here is where it matters to you. You buy a candle for a bedroom or a small living room, you burn it two hours a night, and by week three the jar walls have a grey film and the scent has flattened. The wax formula is doing more to shape that experience than the fragrance ever will. The word doing the most work on any candle label is "blend"
A blend has no fixed recipe. It can be nine parts one wax and one part another, or the reverse. Nothing on the label tells you the ratio.
Candle makers blend for good reasons. Beeswax alone is stubborn. It has the highest melting point of any common candle wax, it shrinks as it cools, and it does not like being dyed. Vegetable waxes are softer and cheaper and pour smooth.
Add a petroleum wax and the problems mostly disappear. The surface stays glassy. The color stays even. The pour behaves the same in July and in January.
So the honest read of any "blend" label is that the maker solved a manufacturing problem. Whether that solution ends up in your air is the part worth understanding.
What each ingredient on the list actually is
I have ranked these from the ones most people skim past to the one that changes how you should think about the whole candle.
Cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol
These are fatty alcohols, waxy white solids that melt around body temperature to a bit above it. They can be made from plant oils or from petroleum feedstock, and the label does not say which.
In a candle they act as texture agents. They raise the firmness of a soft wax, help the fragrance oil stay mixed into the wax instead of sweating out, and give the top a smooth finish.
Microcrystalline wax
Microcrystalline wax comes from the heavier end of petroleum refining. Its crystals are much finer than paraffin's, which makes it flexible and sticky rather than brittle.
Candle makers reach for it when they need wax to grip pigment and resist cracking. If you have ever wondered how a jet black candle stays jet black and glossy instead of going chalky, this is a large part of the answer.
Paraffin
Follow paraffin backward and you end up at a refinery. Crude oil goes in and heat separates it into fractions. One heavy fraction carries solid wax suspended in oil.
Refiners chill that fraction, press the wax out, then clean it with solvents and bleaching clay. What comes out the other end is a white, odorless wax that holds a lot of fragrance oil and costs very little.
Which means paraffin is a leftover from making fuel, upgraded and sold as a candle base. It burns, it throws scent well, and it is in an enormous share of the candles sold at every price point. Burning it also produces more visible soot than beeswax does, which is the grey shadow that creeps up the inside of a jar.
Fragrance
One word, and it can stand for a long list. Fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets, so the label rarely names the individual materials.
The concern people raise most often is phthalates, a group of chemicals used in some fragrance formulas to make scent last longer and dissolve more evenly. Made Safe, a nonprofit product certification program, covers phthalates and wick materials in candles in more detail. Byredo does not publish a phthalate disclosure that I can point to, so I will not claim one way or the other.
What you can do is look for the words phthalate-free stated plainly. A brand that has done that work usually says so.
The wick
Cotton wicks are the standard across most of the industry and they are a fine choice. Metal-core wicks are the ones to avoid, and lead cores have been banned in the United States for years.
Wick type also changes how the candle behaves. A cotton wick curls as it burns and needs trimming to stay short. A wooden wick burns as a flat edge, holds its shape longer, and crackles quietly while it works.
Why a black candle is harder to make cleanly
Color is an ingredient too. Wax does not turn black on its own, so pigment or dye has to go in, and it has to stay suspended while the wax cools over hours.
That takes a wax system that can hold pigment without streaking. Petroleum waxes are good at this, which is one reason deeply colored candles so often include them.
A pure beeswax candle gives that up. Beeswax comes out of the hive somewhere between pale gold and warm amber depending on the season and the flowers, and that is the color you get. We add no chemical dyes, so our candles look like wax rather than like an object.

How to read any candle label in thirty seconds
You do not need a chemistry background. You need four checks, in this order.
First, find the wax and see whether a percentage is given. "100% beeswax" is a claim a brand can be held to. "Natural wax blend" is a description.
Second, look for the words phthalate-free next to the fragrance. Silence is not proof of anything, but a clear statement is easy to make and easy to check.
Third, check the wick material. Cotton and wood are both fine. Anything with a metal core goes back on the shelf.
Fourth, look at the color of the wax and ask why it is that color. A dye is an ingredient the label often skips.
"But mine is a beautiful jar and it has never bothered me"
Fair. Plenty of people burn paraffin blends for years with no complaints, and a well-made candle burned properly in a ventilated room is a small exposure.
The people who notice tend to be the ones who spend hours in one room with the door shut. Small bedrooms, home offices, apartments in winter. That is where wax choice stops being abstract.
The other common objection is that the ingredient list is short, so the candle must be simple. Length is the wrong measure. Five words can include a petroleum wax and an undisclosed fragrance formula, while three words can cover the whole thing.
Getting more out of whatever candle you own
These rules apply to every candle on your shelf, including the expensive one.
On the first burn, leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the edge of the container. Wax remembers that first pool. If you blow it out early, it will tunnel down the middle for the rest of its life.
Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before every burn. A long wick makes a tall flame, and a tall flame makes soot and eats through wax.
Keep sessions to about four hours. Keep the candle away from open windows and vents, because a flickering flame melts wax unevenly and leaves carbon on the glass. Recenter the wick after you put it out, while the wax is still soft.
