Aesop named its candles after people who studied the sky. Callippus, Aganice, Ptolemy. The Australian house had been selling skincare and fragrance for decades before it poured a candle at all, and the collection only arrived in October 2020. The names are the part people repeat. The ingredient line printed under them gets read far less often.
Ask ten shoppers what a very expensive candle from a plant-forward skincare brand is made of, and most will guess soy, or coconut, or something pressed from a farm crop. The guess is fair. It is also off, and the correction is published by Aesop itself. Learning to read that one line is the difference between paying for wax and paying for a ceramic pot, which is why so many people start comparing labels against single-ingredient options like our pure beeswax candles once they know which words matter.
A skincare label and a candle label are held to different rules
Buy a moisturizer and you get a full ingredient list, in order, in standardized naming. That is required. Cosmetics go on your skin, so the rules are strict about disclosure.
A candle sits in a different category. In the US it is a household good, and there is no requirement that it carry a complete ingredient list at all. That is why the average candle box tells you the scent name, the vessel size, and almost nothing else.
So when a brand does publish a composition line, it is worth reading closely. Aesop publishes one. It is short, and every word in it is doing real work.

Two things follow from it. First, these are not soy candles, and they are not fully plant-based candles. Second, they are a blend, and the split between the paraffin part and the vegetable part is not published.
Blends are extremely common. Most candles on most shelves are blends. What varies is whether the brand says so out loud, and Aesop does, which is more than plenty of houses at any price manage.
The company also states it uses ingredients with a proven record of safety, efficacy and sustainability, and all Aesop products are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free with no ingredient tested on animals. Those are real points in its favor and they should stay in the picture.
None of that answers the question a careful buyer is actually asking, which is what happens in the air of your room when a paraffin blend burns. To get there you need to know where paraffin starts.
Where paraffin comes from, step by step
Crude oil goes into a refinery and gets heated until it separates by weight. Light gases come off the top. Gasoline and kerosene come off next.
Further down sits the heavy fraction used for lubricating oil. That fraction carries a waxy solid in it, and refiners have to pull the wax out to make the oil usable. What they remove is called slack wax.
Slack wax is then de-oiled, treated, bleached and filtered until it turns into the odorless white slabs candlemakers buy. It is cheap, it holds fragrance well, and it pours beautifully.
Trace the chain back and the material is a leftover from oil refining. Paraffin is petroleum waste, cleaned up and repackaged. That is not a slur, it is the supply chain.
Research on burning candles has found that paraffin releases volatile organic compounds, including benzene, toluene and formaldehyde. Those compounds are real and the concern about them is legitimate. Anyone who has ever felt a dull ache behind the eyes an hour into a heavily scented candle is not imagining a mechanism.
So what is actually in an Aesop candle
Here is the answer, plainly. An Aesop candle is a paraffin and vegetable wax blend carrying a fragrance concentrate, poured into a reusable ceramic vessel, made by a brand that is vegan, cruelty-free, and careful about the safety record of what it buys.
What you are paying for is the fragrance work and the object. Aesop's perfumery is genuinely good, the vessels get reused for pens and brushes long after the wax is gone, and the naming is lovely. What fragrance concentrate is allowed to cover
Fragrance concentrate is a category, not a recipe. Inside it sit aroma molecules, some distilled from plants and some built in a lab, and a brand can list the category without listing the parts.
Aesop's candle allergen declarations name compounds such as linalool, linalyl acetate, eugenol, isoeugenol, cedryl acetate and cinnamaldehyde. Linalool is the soft floral note in lavender. Eugenol is the warm bite in clove. Cinnamaldehyde is what makes cinnamon smell like cinnamon.
Seeing those names is a good sign, because it means the brand is declaring known sensitizers rather than hiding them. Usage levels for fragrance materials are governed by IFRA standards, which set maximum concentrations by product type, with candles falling in a category that assumes little direct skin contact.

We are not going to tell you a candle treats a headache, and if scent triggers symptoms for you, follow your doctor's guidance first. The four things that decide how any candle burns
Wax gets the attention, but three other choices matter almost as much, and you can check two of them with your own eyes.
Toxic fragrance
Phthalates and parabens are added to make scent stronger and longer-lasting. They are the most common reason a candle smells great and still leaves a room feeling heavy. Look for the words phthalate-free, and if they are absent, assume nothing.
The wick
Cotton and wood are fine. A stiff wick with a metal core is a problem, because whatever that metal is gets aerosolized into the room. Bend the unlit wick between two fingers. If it holds a shape like wire, put it down.
Soot
Black marks climbing the inside of the jar mean incomplete combustion, usually from paraffin, an oversized wick, or a wick nobody trimmed. Soot on glass is soot in the air.
Dye
Color adds nothing to a burn. Beeswax arrives its own warm gold, so we add no chemical dyes and there is nothing to declare.
But the brand says its ingredients are proven safe
It does, and that statement is meaningful. A house with real formulation standards is far better than a no-name pour with no disclosure at all.
Safety records apply to specific materials at specific levels. They do not tell you the paraffin share of the blend, and the paraffin share is what governs soot and VOCs. Two candles can both meet every standard and still burn very differently.
But it was expensive, so it must be clean
Price tracks fragrance development, packaging and brand more than it tracks wax. A ceramic vessel and a perfumer's brief cost real money, and neither one changes what is in the pot.

How to read a candle label in about thirty seconds
- Find the wax. One named wax at 100% beats any unspecified blend.
- Look for phthalate-free in writing. No mention means no claim.
- Bend the wick. Wire-stiff goes back on the shelf.
- Check for added dye. Color is decoration you inhale.
- Check burn hours against price. Hours per dollar is the honest measure.

How to burn whatever candle you already own
On the first light, keep it going until the melted wax reaches the edge of the vessel. Skip that and the flame tunnels straight down the middle, and you lose hours of wax you paid for.
Trim the wick to about 0.2 inches, roughly 5 mm, before every burn. An untrimmed wick is the main cause of smoke and black residue on the rim.
Keep single burns under four hours. After you put it out, re-center the wick while the wax is still soft, because a wick leaning against the side heats the vessel unevenly. Open a window or crack a door if you burn anything scented for long stretches.
